The Benefits of Stretching
Studies show that there are many benefits to stretching before physical activity. Stretching correctly can improve your range of motion, which will help you improve your athletic performance and decrease your risk of injury.
Before diving into stretching, knowing how to stretch properly is key. There are several steps to stretching properly, including:
- Focus on major muscle groups
- Don’t bounce and don’t aim to stretch till it hurts
- Hold stretches and make sure they are sport specific
- Keep up with stretching
- Bring movement into stretching
While stretching, know when to exercise caution. If you have a chronic condition or an injury, adjusting your techniques will avoid further damage. Remember that stretching is not a warm-up. Stretching can help prevent injuries, but it doesn't always happen that way. Stretching will not prevent an overuse injury. The appropriate stretches will help you be successful on the field and avoid any possible injuries.
