Carolina Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Center has a rich heritage in medical care for the people of piedmont North Carolina. Our history is tightly woven with the origins of the North Carolina Orthopedic Hospital in Gastonia. Before it opened in 1921, specialty treatment for broken bones, arthritis and birth defects hardly existed in the rural south. This facility quickly became a haven for injured and crippled children. The steady hands and skills of the first surgeon, Dr. O.L. Miller, brought hope to these children. By 1928, Dr. Miller recruited Dr. William M. Roberts for help with the endless flow of handicapped children. Within five years, Dr. Miller moved to Charlotte and Dr. Roberts became the hospital's Chief Surgeon. Both were founders of the Miller Orthopaedic Clinic, which had offices in Gastonia as well as Charlotte. In the late 1940's, polio swept its crippling hand across much of the United States. The Orthopedic Hospital overflowed with paralyzed children. Dr. George Miller, no relation to Dr. O.L. Miller, became the Associate Surgeon in 1950. The Miller Orthopaedic Clinic split into three practices during 1952 and Drs. Miller and Roberts established the Gaston Orthopaedic Clinic. Like many doctors of the era, they had a Main Street office in the Realty Building. Dr. Glendall King, fresh from service with the U.S.Navy, joined them in 1965. Gaston Orthopaedic Clinic's doctors continued an active role at the Orthopedic Hospital until its closure in 1979. While still in active practice, Dr. Roberts died suddenly in 1973. The following year Dr. Charles Niemeyer joined Gaston Orthopaedic Clinic. Dr. Edward S. Whitesides, a Gastonia native, began his own practice in 1956. He was joined in 1974 by Drs. Robert A. Blake and William Jarman. The Whitesides and Blake practice later became Southern Orthopaedics and Dr. Jarman joined Gaston Orthopaedic Clinic. Carolina Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Center is the result of a 1999 merger between the Gaston Orthopaedic Clinic and Southern Orthopaedics. This association combined over fifty years of continuous orthopaedic care and made the new group one of the oldest and most experienced practices in North Carolina. Their innovative skills were forerunners in the treatment of many musculoskeletal conditions including surgery for scoliosis, congenital dislocated hips and club feet. The present team of five orthopaedic physicians, a podiatrist with a foot and ankle specialty and an two orthopaedic physician assistants offer expertise in all aspects of musculoskeletal medicine. While proud of their heritage, the group continues to remain on the cutting edge of the latest developments of orthopaedics. |
